Health Tips: How to handle a Common Cold with your Fitness Journey

Finally found PB in a store here!!

When I get a head cold, I'm a wimp. There, I said it.

Whew. That feels good. My husband started the week with a bad head cold, and he played through practice twice a day and 1 full game. What have I done since he gave me the cold? Complained. Another reason he's my Superman.

Each day my husband and I prioritize some quiet time to spend reading Scripture, discussing how it applies to our life and then in prayer. Today, we read Hebrews 13 + Philippians 2:14-15 and this verse in particular stood out to me: "Do everything without grumbling and arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world".

Wow. Hold the phone. Whether you are a person of faith or not, I think we can all agree that there is great light that comes from a person when they never grumble or complain. Think for a moment on the people you know. Think of someone who complains a lot and grumbles about everything. Did you just frown? Me too! Now, think about someone you know who is always finding the positive, and who never complains. Did you just smile? Me too! The power of joy in all our circumstances is astounding to me. We can shine in our communities, our schools, our work places, our families by choosing not to complain or grumble even when the cards are stacked against us. Even when I'm sick.

So what does this look like in our health journeys? How do we not allow a head cold keep us from losing momentum in our programs? When I hit a speed bump like being sick, my fitness generally loses steam. Then when I feel better, I'm feeling defeated instead of pumped to jump right back in the game. Below are some tips on how we can beat the common cold AND stay on top of our fitness journeys.

1. Get and Stay Hydrated! Now much to my disappointment, this does not mean throwing back Capri Sun after Capri Sun. That would definitely steer you off course with your nutrition because of the sugar content in one of those pouches. So instead, drink some refreshing water! Infuse your water with one of these options. Drink some tea and have some soup! Get hydrated :)

2. Take a Steamy shower! Ohhh lala! That sounds amazing! This morning my head was killing me, so I jumped in the warm shower and this definitely helped ease the throb! If you have a bath, try filling it with some epsom salt! This helps decrease inflammation, and can help your body recover.

3. Work outs: Rule of thumb if it's symptoms just ABOVE the neck, then it's ok to work out. If it's symptoms below the neck (tightness in chest, cough, body aches, fatigue, fever etc), then rest your body. However, VERY important to listen to your body and only push it as far as it can go.

4. Nutrition: If you're anything like me you immediately start consuming comfort food when you're feeling bad. BUT DONT! You will recover faster and feel better when you chose to continue on with your cleaner eating. I have allowed myself some dark chocolate but am doing my best to maintain my portion control + clean eating. This way if you need to miss a workout or two, you won't have backslid too far.

5. Immune Boosters: The following foods are known to naturally boost your immune system. Try introducing them into your diet so that your immune system is strong to prevent illness or help you recovery quicker.
-Elderberry
-Button Mushrooms
-Acai Berry
-Oysters
-Watermelon
-Cabbage
-Almonds
-Grapefruit
-Wheatgerm
-Low-Fat Yogurt
-Garlic
-Spinach
-Tea
-Sweet Potato
-Broccoli
-Shakeology
